WANDERING SPIRITS: Jazzy Drinks

Join us as we get into the true “spirit” of the week leading up to the Eau Claire Jazz Festival and 52nd Street by focusing on craft cocktails that have a special tie to the world of jazz. Lakely Manager Jorja Vradenburg and Head Bartender Logan Slaght will be leading a demonstration and sampling of four cocktails that specifically have a rich history alongside jazz music. From the famous libations of jazz’s de facto capital city of New Orleans to a cocktail hugely popular in the jazz-soaked speakeasys of the Prohibition era, you’ll get the chance to sample – and learn to create – the Ramos Gin Fizz, Sazerac, Vieux Carré, and The Last Word. In addition, Jorja will be recapping the unique coming-of-age stories associated with each of these historic gems. Class begins at 7:00pm and lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

JAZZ FEST: 52nd Street

Friday night at the Eau Claire Jazz Festival celebrates the true culture of jazz as Downtown Eau Claire transforms into a jazz nightclub scene. 52nd Street is a re-creation of the historic 52nd Street of New York City, where jazz greats like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Louis Armstrong sat in with different ensembles in a variety of nightclubs, simply because they loved to play jazz. Both The Gallery and The Lakely will serve as venues for this year's 52nd Street event featuring a variety of music styles, including ragtime, blues, acoustic, and big band. It's an exciting night of live music downtown - you never know who might bring their horn to sit in! Join over 3,000 people to enjoy this once a year party!

Tickets are $10, and will be available at the door.

LAKELY LOVES... Uncle Gilly's Maple Syrup

LAKELY LOVES... Uncle Gilly's Maple Syrup

Join us as we welcome Gil Vernon of Uncle Gilly’s Maple Syrup for a truly “sweet” dinner. As the main supplier of maple syrup for The Lakely, Gil is far more than just a mere maple syrup producer. With his small sugarbush in northern Dunn County, he utilizes the spring sap run as a chance to gather his friends and family to his land and make a veritable communion out of the process.

For this dinner, Chef Nathan Berg will be creating a six-course dinner which will showcase the amazing versatility of one of Wisconsin’s truly native sources of sugar. Additionally, Lakely Head Bartender Logan Slaght will also be offering for purchase some creative craft cocktails utilizing this drink-friendly treat. And of course, Gil himself will be on hand to explain the finer details of the process that turns this spring spectacle into the dark, sweet ingredient that we all know and love. But more importantly, Gil will almost certainly share some of his wonderfully poetic lessons about the things that maple syrup – and its production – can teach us all about life here in the Upper Midwest.

Dinner cost is $55/person. Call The Oxbow front desk at 715.839.0601 for your reservations. Sorry, but we cannot accommodate significant dietary restrictions for these events at this time.

ABV CLUB: A Discussion on Yeast (with Modicum Brewing Co.)

ABV CLUB: A Discussion on Yeast (with Modicum Brewing Co.)

Join us for this month’s ABV Club as we discuss the most complex and mysterious of beer’s principle four ingredients: yeast! The single-celled microorganism that’s responsible for ALL of the alcoholic beverages that we know and enjoy, yeast is most prominently expressed in the form of beer. Although much fervor in the craft beer world surrounds hops and malts and barrels and adjuncts, yeast is arguably the most important ingredient in beer, putting its stamp upon the backbone of a brew in terms of flavor, body and its ultimate alcohol content.

For this discussion, we’re ecstatic to welcome in one of the best yeast-wranglers that we know: Eric Rykal of Modicum Brewing Co. Eric will be discussing many of the scientific properties of yeast, the differences between ale, lager and wild yeasts, and some of the challenges of harnessing the power of an army of microscopic beer-makers. Luckily for all of us, his discussion will also include a sampling of various Modicum brews, each with a unique interpretation on the properties of various forms of yeast.

This should be an incredible evening of learning and sampling for the beer lover in you, and a rare opportunity to sample some Modicum beers outside of their nearby brewery!

Class is $15/person and lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

GALLERY FRIDAY: The Nunnery + Half Gringa

The layers of The Nunnery’s voice build into a chorus; each song or performance becomes a calm, meditative experience. The Nunnery is about collaboration and combining music and art with an audience. https://thenunnerymusic.bandcamp.com/

An emotional scab-picker, Half Gringa's work explores the confluence of Latinx and Midwestern identity. Her first LP, Gruñona, reveals a palimpsest of wounds upon scars. Contemplative and choleric, all manner of memorials to the past are revealed—mountains, dive bars, orchards, trains, expressways, tiny kitchens, Chicago, Caracas, and outer space. https://halfgringa.bandcamp.com/album/gru-ona

GALLERY FRIDAY: Flaming Doublewides

Join the Flaming Doublewides—the Chippewa Valley’s deep-fried, fit to be tied, swamp-rockin, blues-honkin, large and in charge, retro-billy blast from a soulful, yet greasy, yet groove-driven planet of bourbon, barbecue, and tube-amp distortion—in their somewhat quieter yet equally swamptastic semi-acoustic incarnation at The Gallery inside the Oxbow Hotel (The Lakely bar conveniently adjacent!), Friday, May 4th, from 8:00pm to 10:00pm.

Advance tickets are a measly $8, which is actually cool because a big chunk of the proceeds will go to Chippewa Valley Votes, a non-partisan volunteer-based voter assistance effort working across Chippewa, Dunn, and Eau Claire counties seeking to register, educate, and advocate for voters during the 2018 elections and beyond, because more votes is more better, y’all.

Do it for the Etta James, the Stones, the Dylan, the gotdangTennessee Ernie Ford, do it for the Spell On You and for the Fever, do it because you dig democracy and want to keep its mojo workin, do it because you’re too daggone cool to sit at home when it’s time to shake, rattle and roll. You know you want to!

Actual Wolf in the Lakely (Matt Vold w/ Ben Lester + Jeremy Boettcher to open)

There are outlaws, and there are outlaws. Some practice the pose and cultivate the image, though seldom dirty their soft, bourgeois hands with anything actually outside the law. When they do, it is often despicable, irresponsible or just plain mundane. The Actual Wolf (aka Eric Pollard), however, is a real outlaw and has pled guilty to it. Between the bust and before the trial, AW recorded a pair of EPs, each showing ‘another side of the Wolf’. It is one of the most obvious statements of existence: everything takes time, and the truly good, well crafted things in life take more than the rest. If the world has had to wait a while for another full-length release from Actual Wolf, it is only due to craft and cure. Matt Vold with Ben Lester and Jeremy Boettcher will open the show.

GALLERY FRIDAY: Superior Siren + Humbird (solo)

Superior Siren released the debut, full-length, self-titled album on January 12th, 2018. The collection of songs, written by Laura Sellner, portrays the waves of raw emotion and alluring intensity that lives within the music. The album features four songs previously released on the solo Superior Siren EP 'Lotus in the Muck' in 2014. Those tracks have since grown in captivation with the addition of cellist Rachel Gobin, bassist Nyssa Krause, and drummer Emma Deaner. The remaining six songs of new material complete the album with swells of enchanting melodies and moods of ominous storms. The album will intrigue listeners with dream-like serenades and eerie echoes of doom.

Minnesota indie-folk artist Humbird will open the show. Combining a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale, Humbird stretches between experimental folk and environmental Americana to embrace the unexpected. This music invites a refreshing dissonance into the house, it leaves breadcrumbs along the path and reflects light back at the stars.
