ABV Beer Club - Get Bent! (Paddle)

The Lakely is super excited to host Bent Paddle Brewing from Duluth, MN for our February installment of The ABV Club. One of the most exciting (and northernmost) breweries in the Upper Midwest over the past decade, Bent Paddle only recently made its way across the Cheddar Curtain to become available here in Wisconsin. And boy are we lucky!! Patrick Johnston from BP will be on-hand to sample out a wide variety of the brewery’s offerings, included a few highly-sought after limited release beers, such as their Spruce-tipped Harness IPA, Double-Shot Coffee Black Ale and Valve Jockey #4: Doppelbock. Join us in welcoming Patrick and come learn all the details of one of the Midwest’s finest grain-wranglers. Stay afterwards and enjoy half-price on all of the (non-specialty) brews in their lineup.

Class is $15/person and lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

GALLERY SHOW: Shane Leonard with Brian Moen & Jill Heinke Moen

Most often seen as a producer or sideman with artists like Field Report, Mipso, Rose Cousins and others, for this show Shane Leonard will be joined by Brian Moen (drums) and Jill Heinke Moen (bass) to perform new songs from his forthcoming solo record. Expect a considerable departure from the sound of his folk project, Kalispell.

On tour from Portland, OR, Anna Tivel and Jeffrey Martin will open. A nationally touring artist with a deep love of quiet stories, Anna Tivel is beginning to carve a place for herself in the songwriting world. She was a winner of the Telluride Troubadour Contest and the Kerrville Songwriting Contest, placed second at the Rocky Mountain Folk contest, and has shared the stage with heroes and friends like Gregory Alan Isakov, Blind Pilot, Anais Mitchell, Mandolin Orange, Peter Mulvey, Matt the Electrician, Jeffrey Martin and more.

One Go Around, released in October 2017, is Jeffrey Martin's 3rd full length album. He's shared shows with the likes of Sean Hayes, Gregory Alan Isakov, Jeffrey Foucault, Joe Pug, Peter Mulvey, Amanda Shires, Tracy Grammer, David Wilcox, and others.

GALLERY FRIDAY: Pat Keen + Adelyn Rose (solo)

Pat Keen's Albatross LP is an 11-track exercise in stretching the conventions of homemade-pop. Currently a member of Chicago-based, avant-rock outfit Wei Zhongle and formerly a touring member of Ryan Power's band and Guerilla Toss, the 25-year old musician has spent the past few years touring the country and honing his craft while contributing to a thriving, nationwide experimental-rock scene. Now Minneapolis-based, Albatross shows Pat Keen moving from self-produced 4-track tape recording (as on 2015's Leaving EP) toward a more fleshed-out vision of a personal brand of bedroom-rock.

Recorded throughout 2016, Albatross is performed almost entirely by Keen himself. The record began to take shape during the tail end of a 4-month long retreat in New Hampshire, during which time Keen studied guitar and music theory in Brattleboro, VT with Chris Weisman. Featuring guest vocals from the likes of Adelyn Rose's Addie Strei, and other American midwest-based songwriters, Pat Keen's music hints at an underlying pop-sensibility while not shying from experimental influences. The instrumental texture of the record is highly nuanced, as Keen employs all possible timbres from an accompaniment of acoustic and electric guitars, bass and drums. Albatross also shows Keen making a concerted effort to deliver a virtuosic vocal performance. In preparation, he trained his vocals with Minnesota-based musician J.E. Sunde.

Wandering Spirits Cocktail Series: "Absinthe-Minded"

Hopefully you’ve had a chance to make it in for one of The Lakely’s wildly popular Wandering Spirits series events. But if not, here is a great chance to give it a shot! This month, Lakely Manager Jorja Vradenburg and Head Bartender Logan Slaght will be giving a detailed presentation on one of more storied and mysterious spirits out there: absinthe. From its creation in Switzerland in the 18th century to its sordid reputation in late-19th-century France to its subsequent ban in many places around the globe in the 20th century, absinthe has a fascinating and turbulent history without equal in the spirits world. Participants will have a chance to taste a variety of modern versions of absinthe from around the globe as well as sample cocktails in which it is employed. And of course, no study of absinthe would be complete without a presentation of the classic absinthe “drip”. Come see what all the fuss is/was about!!

Class is $20 per person and lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Wandering Spirits classes often sell out, so be sure to buy a ticket in advance to secure your spot.

GALLERY FRIDAY (SUNDAY EDITION): Humbird + Aurora Birch

Where Else, the new EP from Minnesota indie-folk artist Humbird opens gently with softly whispered voices. As these voices begin to collide and overlap, the sound of human vocals begins to flow into water, harmonic drones floating overhead. It’s a viscerally visual sound, an echo of the clear, unbroken silences of the Minnesota woods that first inspired Humbird songwriter Siri Undlin. The eldest daughter of a trial lawyer and Lutheran preacher, Undlin witnessed the power of stories from a young age and began writing music and performing at the age of 12. Born and raised in Minneapolis, she speaks today of a city that’s still surprisingly close to the rivers and forests of the land, the images of her youth in the Midwest coming back unbidden as she travels the earth. In 2014, Undlin undertook a year’s travel through Northern Europe as part of a fellowship, drawing lasting inspiration from Norse mythology, Sami animism and joiks, the Welsh countryside, Paleolithic cave paintings, old world lutherie, and frozen Icelandic landscapes.

Combining a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale, Humbird stretches between experimental folk and environmental Americana to embrace the unexpected. This music invites a refreshing dissonance into the house, it leaves breadcrumbs along the path and reflects light back at the stars.

"In an age of stark division during yet another hyper-polarized election cycle, in a time when even playing the National Anthem sends the Internet into apoplectic shock, when the threat of random violence leads to a level of heightened awareness which verges on paranoia, Dead Horses’ universal idea that we are bound by a common need to share our love and to hope for better times seems not only fitting, it’s actually much needed." -National Road Magazine "Cartoon Moon" album review on September 21, 2016
