WANDERING SPIRITS: A Wonderful World of Old Fashioneds

Join us for this month’s installation of Wandering Spirits, The Lakely’s deeper exploration of craft libations. This month, we’ll be focusing on Old Fashioneds, that cocktail that we might think of as a Wisconsin classic, but whose origins are from another time and place. Manager Jorja Vradenburg and Head Bartender Logan Slaght will be discussing the fascinating history of the Old Fashioned, as well as the numerous regional variations and modern interpretations. Naturally, they’ll be mixing up a few of these variations – including The Lakely’s near-famous Great Grampa (actually not famous at all…but we’re hoping for big things) – for participants to try. Class lasts from 7 – 8:30pm. Cost is $20 per person.

ABV Club 10.26: Hops Tasting with The Brewing Projekt

Join us for our 2nd installment of The ABV Club, a monthly series we’ve created to highlight various aspects of the (local) world of craft beer. This month, Chef Nathan Berg will be joined by Will Glass from The Brewing Projekt to do an in-depth discussion and tasting of a wide variety of hops.

The flowers that serve as the bittering agent for ALL beer, hops are all-too-often just associated with IPAs and other heavily-hopped beers. But the truth is, there are hundreds of varieties of hops, each with a unique character that can be imparted within a brew. Some are subtle and floral. Some are aggressive and citrus-y. Some are none of those things. For this event, we’ll be tasting around 8-10 unique varieties of hops, singled out to showcase their specific profiles, as well as discussing what styles of beer they match well with. We’ll also be tasting a few different beers from Brewing Projekt’s “Dare Mighty Things” series, all of which have been created to feature a single variety of hops and it’s qualities. This is a really exciting event for any craft beer lover – or homebrewer – who would like to dive a little bit deeper into their glass of beer.

The fun begins at 7:00pm and will last approx. 1.5 hours.

Punt on Third is a Minneapolis based trio that plays music inspired by various American Roots traditions, but with special attention to 3 part harmony and intricate instrumentation. Although they have been friends for a long time, their shared affinity for traditional tunes, melancholic songwriting, and considered arrangements is what makes them click as musicians. They are not too sure exactly where they fit in the musical landscape, but they think that they do a pretty good job of being distinctly Minnesotan, for better or for worse.

GALLERY FRIDAY: Rachel Hanson + Barbaro

A recent transplant to Minneapolis from the back roads of northern Wisconsin, Rachel Hanson's songs strike a chord somewhere deep in the hearts of both travelers and soul-seekers. Her sound is familiar, yet not overly derivative, from a timeless era of classics. Opening the night, Savannah Smith only needs thirty seconds of your time to win you over. In a world filled to its brim with would-be young singer-songwriters, Savannah’s vocal prowess, and her absolute mastery of crafting raw and gritty emotion into beautiful melodies, defines her from the crowd in moments.  Barbaro is a 3-piece bluegrass band featuring Kyle Shelstad (Kitchen Dwellers), Jeff Swanner (Pert Near Sandstone, May North) and Issac Sammis (Tin Can Gin). We use traditional bluegrass instruments to blend country, jazz and newgrass styles and create a melting pot of something auld and something new.
