ABV CLUB: Tis the Saison

With spring finally in full force and summer just up the road, we’ve decided that the time is right for doing a study/sampling of saisons. A style of beer which originated in southern Belgium, saisons were brewed at farmhouses throughout the region in the wintertime to help quench the palettes of farm workers throughout the summer months. They were historically a low-ABV ale and, despite all of them being generally lighter in body/color, each farm’s brew was quite unique. Today, the style remains on the lighter side but with numerous variations on color/style and it is brewed all over the world. More than anything, saison/farmhouse ales tend to be a perfect beer to showcase the complex beauty of yeast.

For this round of The ABV Club, Chef Nathan Berg will lead a tasting of several different varieties of saison, mostly from the Midwest but with some stellar examples from outside of our backyard peppered in as well. He’ll also discuss a bit more about the history and characteristics of this gem of a beer style. So get ready to join us and sample the beer style that truly represents summer!

GALLERY FRIDAY: Nickel&Rose + Jerrika Mighelle

Nickel&Rose is an American folk-music duo made up of Upright Bassist Johanna Rose and Guitarist Carl Nichols. They formed in the summer of 2016 and spent their first winter and the following spring traveling Europe, playing dozens of shows in France, Czech Republic, Germany, Romania, Poland, and Ukraine. While in Berlin they recorded their EP, Oh Sweet Love, released in April 2017. Oh Sweet Love, is a sweet-sounding auditory souvenir of Nichols’ and Rose’s four month European journey and a recorded testament to the two-piece’s ability to turn tough times into something vibrant with help from a traveling companion.

Nickel&Rose have influences that span the spectrum of American music. Carl’s background brings elements of West African music and Blues while Johanna brings her experience playing Bluegrass, Folk and Jazz. From loss to heart break to love, Nickel&Rose address the human experience with gentle harmonies and soul stirring cries. With a shared appreciation for traditional music and a desire to break rules, the two have have created a unique sound that embodies Americana's past and future.

A failed move to New York and new love was just the existential dilemma Minnesota's Nick Elstad needed to give life to his indie dream pop project, Sleeping Jesus. 2016 saw the release of the Perennial EP, a hazy and sweet four song journey of young love and the beautiful foolishness that accompanies it. The now five piece group went from basement to the main stage at First Avenue in one short year, picked as one of the best new bands of Minneapolis in 2016.

LAKELY LOVES... Morel Mushrooms

Get ready for a big one folks! The month of May is upon us and in the woods of Western Wisconsin, that means it’s almost time for morels to emerge!! To celebrate the annual appearance of this mysterious, oft-elusive, but altogether amazing fungus, we’re putting it center stage (er… plate) for a six-course Lakely Loves… blowout!

In fact, the overall fascination with – and subsequent popularity of – this short-lived culinary delight has made it so that our initial date for this dinner is already almost booked to capacity. So in order to give everyone interested in experiencing a six-course feast of morels as prepared by Chef Nathan Berg, we’ve decided to do TWO DATES for this limited event.

So on both Tuesday, May 22nd and Wednesday, May 23rd, we’ll be holding back-to-back “Lakely Loves…Morels." There are already only a few spots remaining for the Wednesday dinner but, as of this posting, Tuesday is pretty open. We anticipate that both of these dinners will fill up quickly, so you’d better call the front desk at The Oxbow (715.839.0601) right away to reserve your spot.

Actual Wolf in the Lakely (Matt Vold w/ Ben Lester + Jeremy Boettcher to open)

There are outlaws, and there are outlaws. Some practice the pose and cultivate the image, though seldom dirty their soft, bourgeois hands with anything actually outside the law. When they do, it is often despicable, irresponsible or just plain mundane. The Actual Wolf (aka Eric Pollard), however, is a real outlaw and has pled guilty to it. Between the bust and before the trial, AW recorded a pair of EPs, each showing ‘another side of the Wolf’. It is one of the most obvious statements of existence: everything takes time, and the truly good, well crafted things in life take more than the rest. If the world has had to wait a while for another full-length release from Actual Wolf, it is only due to craft and cure. Matt Vold with Ben Lester and Jeremy Boettcher will open the show.

WANDERING SPIRITS: Keep Your Gin Up!

WANDERING SPIRITS: Keep Your Gin Up!

Join us for the May edition of our Wandering Spirits cocktail series as we get into the full swing of summer by talking all things gin. As one of the few primary boozes in the world, gin may also be the one with the most variance in flavor profile due to its somewhat non-specific means of production. Gins can be piney, floral, medicinal, herbaceous, sweet, dry --- or any combination of these and dozens of other characteristics.

For this class, Head Bartender Logan Slaght (in his final Wandering Spirits teaching role) and Lakely Manager Jorja Vradenburg will be leading a sampling of a number of various gins, focusing heavily on many of the newer gins from craft distilleries of the Upper Midwest, talking about their individual profiles. They will also be mixing and sampling a couple of gin cocktails, as well as discussing many of its seemingly infinite uses in mixed drinks. It’s the perfect time of year to make friends with this delicious and versatile spirit. Class begins at 7:00pm and lasts approximately 1.5 hours.
