LAKELY LOVES... Stone Soup

LAKELY LOVES... Stone Soup

Get ready for a dinner quite unlike anything you’ve experienced before – one in which YOU are a part of creating the menu! For this truly special dinner, Chef Nathan Berg is harkening the spirit of the old folk tale of “Stone Soup”, a story meant to teach the beauty of community through the concept of everyone having a lot when they contribute a little. But it will also incorporate a significant culinary challenge for The Lakely staff, in which we will be creating a six-course meal in just one hour!!!

Here’s how it works… For every table that signs up for the dinner, you will be asked to provide ONE ingredient no later than 6:00pm. This means that each table will bring one ingredient equivalent to the number of people at their table. (So, a table of four would bring enough of something for four people.) We will then hold a cocktail hour until 7:00pm, at which point diners will sit down and enjoy a six-course meal featuring ALL of the ingredients that they provided. Naturally, Nathan will also be presenting the stone soup story in its entirety.

There are a few limitations for the ingredients that we would ask you to bring. First, we would ask that you don’t bring any kind of meat/fish/egg – we’ll take care of those components. Additionally, to comply with health code, we also ask that your ingredient is a “whole” food, which is to say that you don’t bring something that has already been prepared or cooked by yourself or someone else. This could be any kind of grain/starch, fruit, vegetable, dairy product (in a sealed container), sauce/spice (also in a sealed container please) or any other ingredient that you dream up, so long as it fits within the rules above.

Please join us for this unbelievably unique dinner to experience the spontaneous joy of community and marvel as The Lakely staff takes their self-imposed challenges to the next level! This dinner is sure to sell out quickly, so call right away to make sure you’ve got a spot. Sorry, but we cannot accommodate significant dietary restrictions for this event.

GALLERY SHOW: Jim Hoehn & Mary Cutrufello

Jim Hoehn - an Eau Claire native - is a career journalist/author/songwriter who has carved out a surprisingly successful niche as a performing songwriter since first stumbling out of the pressbox with a guitar. During his journalism career – much of it spent as a sportswriter – Hoehn has covered everything from plane crashes to Jeffrey Dahmer to the Super Bowl. As a songwriter, he's opened for the likes of Warren Zevon, Jerry Jeff Walker, Rodney Crowell, Robert Earl Keen, Don Williams and many others.

St. Paul roots-rock singer-songwriter Mary Cutrufello has been a mainstay in the Americana scene here and in Texas for a quarter of a century. She's performed on The Tonight Show and Austin City Limits, and toured in all 50 states and several European countries. Hailed by USA Today as "a fierce guitarist with with a blistered-throat voice," Cutrufello mixes original songs and classics of American music (think Willie Nelson and Steve Earle) into a captivating, heartland-proud musical stew at once timeless and immediate.

GALLERY FRIDAY: Gaelynn Lea

When Gaelynn Lea won NPR Music’s 2016 Tiny Desk Contest, her two decades as a hardworking and talented musician finally crystallized in a beautiful moment of national recognition. It was also just the beginning of a grand adventure. With the wind of her award at their backs, Gaelynn and her husband Paul sold their house in Northern Minnesota, quit their jobs, bought a van, and hit the road.

Since then, Gaelynn has played over 250 shows in 42 states and seven countries, adding nearly 100,000 miles to their Ford Econoline’s odometer. The singer-songwriter and violinist has performed everywhere from coffee shops, bars, schools and festivals; she’s graced the stage of renowned venues like Nashville’s Music City Roots, The Kennedy Center, House of Blues and even BBC World News. This June she was featured at arts festivals in Iceland and Switzerland, in July, she appeared at the Winnipeg Folk Fest, and is set to perform at Travelers' Rest Fest (curated by The Decemberists) in August.

Join her for another much-anticipated, intimate appearance at The Gallery inside The Oxbow Hotel on Friday, September 7th.

GALLERY SHOW: Dead Horses

GALLERY SHOW: Dead Horses

At fifteen, Dead Horses frontwoman Sarah Vos’ world turned upside down. Raised in a strict, fundamentalist home, Vos lost everything when she and her family were expelled from the rural Wisconsin church where her father had long served as pastor. What happened next is the story of Dead Horses’ stunning new album, ‘My Mother the Moon,” a record full of trauma and triumph, despair and hope, pain and resilience.

Blending elements of traditional roots with contemporary indie folk, the album is both familiar and unexpected, unflinchingly honest in its portrayal of modern American life, yet optimistic in its unshakable faith in brighter days to come. Earthy and organic, Vos’ songs often reveal themselves to be exercises in empathy and outreach; she writes not only to find meaning in the struggles she’s endured, but also to embrace kindred souls on their own personal journeys of self-discovery. As much as the album is a reckoning with the past and everything she witnessed growing up (mental illness, poverty, addiction, and violence), it’s also an effort to shape the future, to build a community based around art and love and beauty and acceptance, a community to replace the one she was so brusquely robbed of as a child.

GALLERY FRIDAY: Nickel&Rose + Jerrika Mighelle

Nickel&Rose is an American folk-music duo made up of Upright Bassist Johanna Rose and Guitarist Carl Nichols. They formed in the summer of 2016 and spent their first winter and the following spring traveling Europe, playing dozens of shows in France, Czech Republic, Germany, Romania, Poland, and Ukraine. While in Berlin they recorded their EP, Oh Sweet Love, released in April 2017. Oh Sweet Love, is a sweet-sounding auditory souvenir of Nichols’ and Rose’s four month European journey and a recorded testament to the two-piece’s ability to turn tough times into something vibrant with help from a traveling companion.

Nickel&Rose have influences that span the spectrum of American music. Carl’s background brings elements of West African music and Blues while Johanna brings her experience playing Bluegrass, Folk and Jazz. From loss to heart break to love, Nickel&Rose address the human experience with gentle harmonies and soul stirring cries. With a shared appreciation for traditional music and a desire to break rules, the two have have created a unique sound that embodies Americana's past and future.
